Joel Robrish

Attorney Joel Robrish has been in the private practice of criminal law since November 1969. He has forty years of experience defending clients facing federal and state criminal charges. He provides pre-indictment counsel to those under investigation by grand juries or other state or federal agencies. In addition to the thousands of criminal matters that he has successfully resolved, he has also tried hundreds of criminal cases.

Over the years, Mr. Robrish has handled many serious and challenging cases. He has a reputation for using aggressive tactics and innovative strategies in the defense of a vast array of criminal prosecutions ranging from reckless driving and DUI, domestic violence, drug trafficking, complex white collar crime to first degree murder. Mr. Robrish is a strong advocate in the preservation of the constitutional rights of those who may be the target of a criminal investigation as well as the victim of unlawful and excessive police action. He firmly believes that each client, no matter how serious the crime charged , deserves the best possible legal defense.

In a case that took almost seven years to get to trial, Mr. Robrish represented the families of two Miami drug dealers who jumped into the Miami River and drowned at the hands of an infamous group of Miami Police officers who received national notoriety and become known as the Miami River Cops . These Miami River Cops conducted an armed raid at the Jones Boat Yard on the Miami River during which they stole hundreds of kilos of cocaine for themselves and at gun point caused two men to jump into the river and drown. A federal jury found six former City of Miami Police Officers personally liable for violating the civil rights of the victims and ordered the cops to pay $ 1.25 million dollars in damages to the families.

Three days after his uncle Mick Jagger performed in South Florida during his famous Voodoo Lounge tour, his nephew, who was visiting Miami was arrested and charged at Miami International Airport with grand theft of a “Mendoza bag” .......a decoy bag police filled with valuable camera equipment. The police intentionally left the bag unattended hoping to arrest members of a gang of thieves who were stealing luggage belonging to arriving tourists. The nephew picked up the bag and as he left the airport he was arrested. Mr. Robrish convinced the presiding judge to dismiss the charges because the police sting constituted “Legal Entrapment” and was against public policy. Mr. Robrish also pointed out to the court that the police action brought unnecessary negative publicity to Miami.

For five years Mr. Robrish represented a Miami Dade Police officer charged in a drug rip off with trafficking in cocaine; conspiracy to commit armed trafficking; and attempted trafficking in cocaine . During a traffic stop the police officer supposedly stole 25 pounds of cocaine from the trunk of a car driven by an undercover agent from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement acting as a drug courier. Because the police officer was armed during the incident, he was facing life in prison if convicted. The drug deal was set up by a police confidential informant who would later sell the drugs and split the profits with the officer. After deliberating for less than an hour, the jury found the officer not guilty.

In one of his most unusual cases, Mr Robrish represented the head of one of Miami’s largest cocaine smuggling rings involving more than 90 million dollars in drug profits, fleets of yachts and off shore racing boats along with the recent seizure of 1664 pounds of cocaine. The prosecution alleged that Mr. Robrish’s client bribed high ranking Bahamian government officials to let him smuggle thousands of kilos of Colombian cocaine through the islands and into South Florida aboard his various yachts. Mr. Robrish successfully negotiated a favorable plea for his client who agreed to plead guilty in exchange for the government’s promise not to prosecute other members of his family, including his mother and brother.
